What is Blue Flag certification of beaches ? -:

~ The Blue Flag Certification Programme for beaches and marinas is run by a Denmark based non-profit organization called the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It was started in France in 1985.

~ The Blue Flag programme promotes sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas through 33 stringent criteria under four major heads -: Environmental education and information, Standards for water quality, Environment management & conservation and safety and services at the beaches.

~ The mission of the Blue Flag Programme is Implementing efficient safety & environmental management systems, promote sustainable tourism development, Promoting and participating in environmental educational programmes and Monitoring environmental conditions in order to mitigate the impact of human activity.

~ Blue Flag Certification is awarded by an International Jury comprising of eminent members of Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

~ The Blue Flag certificate can be obtained by a beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator and serves as an eco-label in FEE member countries.

~ It is awarded annually to beaches and marinas in FEE member countries.

~ The Blue Flag beach is an eco-tourism model and marks out beaches as providing tourists and beachgoers clean and hygienic bathing water, facilities/amenities, a safe and healthy environment and sustainable development of the area.

~ There are more than 4000 blue flag beaches worldwide with Spain leading the list with more than 560 such beaches; Greece and France follow.

~ Chandrabhaga beach on the Konark coast of Odisha is not only India’s but also Asia’s first beach to get the Blue Flag certification.

~ Japan, South Korea and the UAE are the only other Asian nations who have been conferred with a couple of Blue Flag beaches.

~ Like Blue Flag certification by FEE, India has also launched its own eco-label BEAMS (Beach Environment & Aesthetics Management Services) under ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) project to abate pollution in coastal waters, promote sustainable development of beach facilities, protect & conserve coastal ecosystems and natural resources etc.

~ BEAMS is launched by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the Society of Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM).

~ There are 10 blue flag certification beaches in India, have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag certification by FEE.
