~ The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance established by the North Atlantic Treaty. Which was signed on 4 April 1949 by the United States, Canada, and other western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.

~ The North Atlantic Treaty is also known as the Washington Treaty.

~ NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is also called the North Atlantic Alliance.

~ The founding members of NATO are– Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom and the United States.

~ NATO is one of the most powerful military alliances in the world and its members have a combined population of more than 2.5 billion people.

~ NATO’s headquarter are located in the city of Brussels, Belgium. where the Supreme Allied Commander resides.

~ The NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by a non-member external party. The main objective of NATO is to protect the independence and security of the Allies via political and military action.

~ All NATO missions are handled by the ACO under the leadership of SACEUR. The coordination of all forces is managed by The Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).

~ Article Five of the North Atlantic Treaty states that if one member of the alliance is attacked in Europe or North America, it is to be considered an attack on all members. That effectively put Western Europe under the “nuclear umbrella” of the US.

~ At present, 31 countries are the member of The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

~ India is not the part of NATO member countries.

~ Finland is became the recent member of NATO on 4 April 2023.
