Important GK Facts About International Women’s Day -:
~ International Women’s Day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the social, economic, cultural and political fields. International Women’s Day focuses on gender equality and women’s rights.
~ The organization of International Women’s Day was a labor movement. International Women’s Day began in 1908, when 15,000 women in New York City staged a protest demanding reduced working hours, better pay and voting.
~ In 1909, the day was declared as the first National Women’s Day by the Socialist Party of America. But the idea of making this day international was given by a woman named Clara Zetkin. She gave this idea in 1910 at the International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen. 100 women delegates from 17 countries were participating in this conference, all of whom welcomed Clara’s suggestion. After this, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland. However, officially celebrating International Women’s Day began in 1975 when the United Nations started celebrating the event.
~ The centenary of International Women’s Day was celebrated in 2011, so in 2023, the world will celebrate the 112th International Women’s Day.
~ In 1917, the women of Russia staged a four-day protest demanding bread and peace. The then Russian Tsar had to abdicate and the interim government also gave women the right to vote. According to the Julian calendar used in Russia, the day on which the Russian women started the protest was February 23 and Sunday. This day was March 8 according to the Gregorian calendar and since then International Women’s Day was celebrated on this day.
~ Violet, green and white – all three are the colors of International Women’s Day. According to the International Women’s Day campaign, “Purple is a symbol of justice and dignity. Green color is a sign of hope. White color is considered an indicator of purity.” These three colors were decided by the Women’s Social and Political Union of Britain in 1908.
